Transformed - In Christ - Week 1

“In Christ”
Dr. Gary Singleton
Romans 8:1-4
This morning we will begin a sermon series from Romans 8 called “Transformed.” Have you ever noticed that some people seem to have a “deal-making” approach to being a follower of Jesus? They think that if they do their part … if they believe in Jesus and follow a few religious practices … Jesus will do His part and welcome them into heaven. But becoming a follower of Jesus is about much more than just getting saved and avoiding hell. Salvation is not the end of our journey with God - it’s the beginning of God transforming us and sending us out on mission for Him. As we turn to Paul’s words in Romans 8 we will see where this journey of transformation leads. Our transformation in Jesus takes us from “guilty as charged” to “free in Christ.”

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
This Easter Sunday, we celebrate what makes the death and resurrection "Good News!" Remembering the good news of the Gospel strengthens us in the face of the bad news of our temptations. Looking at the first century Corinthian church, we see that no one is beyond redemption when they hear the Good News of Jesus Christ's death for their sins!

Matthew 24:36-51
Dr. Gary Singleton
This morning we are wrapping up our sermon series on the end times from Matthew 24. Jesus is talking to His disciples on the Mount of Olives just days before His crucifixion, and He is telling them what to watch for in the last days. Over the centuries, many have made predictions concerning the end of the world - and all of them have been wrong. Jesus is very clear when he says “… concerning the day and hour no one knows, …” (Matthew 24:36). Jesus tells us we should look for a day - not a date. Our great hope does not rest in knowing the date of Jesus’ return, but in knowing we will live with Jesus forever. Jesus invites us to live today with the end in mind.

“Judgment”
Matthew 24:29-35
This morning we are continuing our sermon series from Matthew 24 on the end times. We are living in the last days … the time between Jesus’ arrival as our Savior and His return as our King. The words of Jesus in Matthew 24 are our rallying cry. Jesus is encouraging us to persevere … to keep pushing back darkness even when we are exhausted. This morning Jesus tells us what to expect at the moment of His return. Jesus comes “with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30), and the people of earth respond with mourning. Why? When Jesus returns, He will come not only as King but also as Judge, bringing justice to our world. Jesus is coming to set everything right. Will you be ready?

Matthew 24:15-28
This morning is week three of our sermon series on the endtimes - a subject that is of great interest to nearly everyone. We are working our way through Jesus’ words to His disciples in Matthew 24, and the passage we will look at today is a kind of rallying cry. This is Jesus encouraging His disciples, and all of His followers, to keep going ... to keep fighting back darkness ... even when they are tired and exhausted. The disciples were ready for Jesus to establish His kingdom, but Jesus told them it was not yet time. So as we listen to Jesus’ words this morning, we will answer two questions: When is Jesus coming back ... and why is He waiting?

“Desolation”
Matthew 24:4-14
This morning we are continuing our sermon series on the end times, and let’s admit it - this is some pretty heavy stuff. All the talk about earthquakes, and false prophets, and the Antichrist is enough to make us cringe in fear and run for cover. But from the beginning, believers did not see the second coming of Jesus as something to fear or dread. They saw it as something that brings hope … something to celebrate. As we continue through Matthew 24, the disciples have asked Jesus for the signs of the end of the age. As we study these signs this morning and understand what Jesus is saying, let us respond by embracing hope, not despair.

Matthew 24:1-3
This morning we begin a sermon series that should be of great interest to nearly everyone. We will spend the next five weeks in a study of the end times. Most of us want to know how the world is going to end and when. We want to know what’s next and what happens when we die. Some live in fear of the end times, and see only the judgment that is coming. Others don’t give it much thought. But some view the end times with an incredible sense of hope. As we work our way through the words of Jesus in Matthew 24, it is our prayer that you will experience this sense of hope, and join the disciples of Jesus throughout the ages in this fundamental belief - We have a King, and He is coming!

“The One Who Guides”
John 16:10-15
Dr. Gary Singleton
Last week we began a two-part study of the Holy Spirit. We are turning to the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John to answer three questions. Who is the Holy Spirit? When does He come into our life? What does He do? We have learned that the Holy Spirit is our Helper and our Defender … like a defense attorney ... and that He comes into our life immediately when we become a believer in Jesus. This morning we will continue our study as we look at what the Holy Spirit does. Once again we will turn to John 16 and listen as Jesus very clearly lays out the role of the Holy Spirit in our life. Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and He guides and directs our steps.

John 16:1-9
Dr. Gary Singleton
We believe that God has eternally existed in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But many of us are guilty of making the Holy Spirit an afterthought. This should not be the case. So we are going to spend a couple of weeks studying and honoring God the Holy Spirit. We have been given a mission to share the gospel and make disciples of all nations, and the Holy Spirit is the One who empowers us to fulfill that mission. For the next two weeks we will look to the Gospel of John for some insight into answering three questions about the Holy Spirit: Who is the Holy Spirit? When does He come into our life? What does He do? Join me this morning as we get better acquainted with God the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 4:4-6
This morning we are wrapping up the most anticipated event of the year for our student ministry - Chi Alpha. Students from over 50 schools converged together this weekend to experience Gospel-centered community and to learn more of what the Gospel enables us to be and do. This year our own Teaching Pastor, Bryan Jones, led the weekend, which focused on Ephesians 4:4-6. ONE moment can define history. ONE decision can change a life. ONE person can start a movement. The power of ONE resounds through scripture. This has been the theme for Chi Alpha 2017. This morning Bryan will show us there is ONE God. ONE way to Him. ONE family united under His banner. And ONE mission we’ve been entrusted with.
